Death to the Death Penalty

Death is the one thing that cannot be undone. Whether the death was from intentional killing, natural causes, or a fatal injury, once someone’s life has been ended, that’s it. So, where does capital punishment stand? Many states have abolished it, but not all. Why is it okay to put someone to death for killing someone else? This was first conceptualized in the eighteenth century, as part of Hammurabi’s Code. His philosophy was “an eye for an eye”, and there were 25 crimes punishable by death. This hypocritical thinking was not brought to America by the Babylonians, but rather European colonists. The first recorded execution was a Captain from Virginia in 1608, for being an alleged spy for Spain. Capital punishment only first started becoming controversial in the 1980’s, when DNA testing became a factor in determining who committed a crime; when it would be known for sure who committed a crime, even if it was after the execution.

In my opinion, capital punishment needs to be abolished in all states. One reason is because it is inhumane. There have been many instances of “botched-executions”. This means that something went wrong and that the death became long and painful, which violated the eighth amendment. Also, death penalty trials are known to be very expensive. A single trial can cost over a million dollars, and take years before a verdict is reached. This tax money should be used to reform the criminal justice system, and keep the crime rate low. Thus, the death penalty needs to be abolished in all states.

Does What You’re Doing Actually Matter?

One question that people ask sometimes is whether or not their work will benefit them in the long run. Most people know what they are doing, and some know how, but very few know why. And why is the only part that inspires people, because you are truly knowing what you really want to do. Eighty percent of people are unhappy with their work, and they also don’t know why they’re doing it. People need to spend their time in a way that matters to them. If everyone on the planet knew why they are doing work, frustration and stress would be gone. The world would be a different place if everyone lived and worked for what they love.

I strive to live and work for what I like to do, and I feel other people should as well. Yes, it is hard, but in the long run, working for what matters to you will bring you forward more in life. I know some kids hate school, but just keep reminding yourself that it is for your own good. You may not like it now, but later in your life when you get an A on the SAT’s, thank your teachers. I want to try and spread the word out to more people about this topic and hopefully you will too. Just take a couple minutes to think about your work and how it will benefit you. If you don’t see any benefits, stop. You aren’t supposed to live your life doing what you hate.

Being Kind to People

Everyday, people meet new people and become good friends. They could meet them in school, in the library, or even in the supermarket. However, did you ever wonder what that person will be like when they grow up? Will they be a movie star, or the President of the United States, or maybe even some kind of inventor? Nobody really knows. Thats why we should be nice to everyone; because its a nice thing to do, and if you ever might need help from them, they will help you.

In the past years, America has gotten so much ruder. From not saying thank you to your parents when they got you your new guitar, or even using your sleeve to wipe your face after eating. We can change this though. A survey on this website says that 75% of people think Americans have gotten ruder.  We can fix this though. If everyone starts acting nice to everyone else and says please and thank you, uses a napkin to wipe their mouth after eating, and acts nice to everyone, maybe we won’t be as rude. If you take one thing from this blog, I hope its that you should be nice to everyone, because they will be nice to you in return.
