Apple Seems to Pull Ahead With Their New Products

Recently, Apple INC. revealed the new Iphone 6. There are three new products that are involved. There is the Iphone 6, the Iphone 6 Plus, and the Iwatch. The Iphone 6 has a 4.7 inch display which is around the same size as the Iphone 5 and the Iphone 5S. This Iphone is running at $199 with a contract. The Iphone 6 plus has a 5.5 display and is much bigger than any of the other Iphones, and is a big as the new Samsung Galaxy S5. The Iphone 6 Plus runs for a whopping $299 with the contract. Finally the Iwatch; this is an accessory for the Iphones that connects to your phone so you can have your phone on your wrist. Both the Iphone 6 and the Iphone 6 Plus both have made the same changes, such as making them very thin and adding sapphire to the screens which makes the screen almost un-crackable.

I personally think that the Iwatch is an excellent addition to the iphones. This makes it so that you do not need to bring your phone everywhere you go. Also, making the Iphone screen larger is a great idea. However, I did not think it was really necessary to make two different versions. All together I believe, as do many other people, that this is the best Iphone that Apple has made so far. I cannot wait until Apple comes out with their next version of the Iphone.

Amazon…Smartphone?

Amazon is famous for their delivery services. Many people prefer to do all their shopping online to avoid the hassle of getting to a store. Each year, Cyber Monday is as big on sales as Black Friday. Amazon does have other services however. Prime deals with faster delivery, Reality TV, Movie streaming, and Music. Some people even prefer Amazon to giants like Netflix and Hulu Plus. Kindle is a big contender in eReading. But, smartphones? Amazon has recently released the Amazon Fire Phone. Much cheaper than other smartphones on the market, it runs Fire OS, and Android based OS. There are 3 classic models of 16, 32 and 64 GB. The size of the phone is on the larger side at 5.48 x 2.62 x 0.35 in. The phone supports a whopping 2 MB of RAM, on a phone!!! The processor is a quadcore 2.2 gHz Krait processor. Max battery life on stand-by is 285 h. The max talk time is 22 h, and the max music play is 65 h. This video is the actual press conference where the Fire phone was released.

The Fire Phone isn’t a bad start for Amazon. With some improvements, it may come to be a major contender in the smartphone market. A first impression shows the OS very similar to Android. However, the cheaper prices may appeal to many people, especially those looking for a first major phone. Personally, I like the look of the phone. Swivel dynamic shortcuts look extremely useful and quick. The “Firefly” button looks intriguing as well. I like the idea of a home button that has many more functions. And of course, like the Kindle Fire, the “Mayday” button. For someone who isn’t tech-savvy and doesn’t like figuring everything out, live helpers can be really helpful. Amazon is also amping the deal with many added offers. Buying the Fire phone will grant a free year of prime, as well as 1000 coins of Amazon gold, roughly a $10 value. For those who like games on their phones, and addicting infinite runner games, etc., this phone might not be the thing. The Amazon app  store isn’t as appealing to developers as much as Google Play or The iOS App Store. All considered however, I think the Fire Phone is a brand new perspective to smartphone, and an interesting addition to the market. We’ll have to see how the sales play out by the end of the year.

Swimming: The Forgotten Sport

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein. Only swimmers would truly understand this. Every single day, we drag ourselves to the freezing pool where we swim back and forth for hours and hours upon end, hoping for success all the while. Depending on the day of the week, we’ll pull ourselves out of the water, change, and head home. On other days, we’ll stay to lift weights, run, and complete physically demanding exercises. We do all of this after a two hour long, hard core swim practice. The next day, we do it all over again. But, there is a method to our madness. The old saying, practice makes perfect, applies to swimmers more than any other athlete in the world. We bust our bottoms day in and day out, following the same routine, staring at the same black line on the bottom of the pool, and completing the same sets over and over again. As crazy as it may seem, this cycle makes us better. Our practices may be ruthless and torturous, but they pay off in the long run. In competition, we sometimes achieve times we never thought possible for ourselves, but no one, other than family and close friends, is there to watch us. We may work this hard, but we’re the only ones who know it. The rest of the world is convinced that swimming is not a sport, and even if they think it is a sport, they’ll most likely believe that it’s strictly a wimp sport.

I’m here to inform you that it’s not, and that swimmers are tired of being ignored. We train for one of the most physically demanding sports on Earth, and when people tell me that swimming is easy, I do not let them get away with it. I tell them to join me at a practice, as I want to see how long they’d actually last. I predict around fifteen minutes, thirty at the most, but people still don’t get it. I dare you to go to a high school football game, and then a high school swim meet. At the football game, the whole town will be there. Kids who aren’t even in high school yet will be there. Parents, friends, adults, children, and anyone who has some spare time will show up. The game will be on the front page of the newspaper the next day, and everyone will be talking about the outcome. On the other hand, nobody even pays attention to the swim meets. The only people who show up are family. Maybe if a friend is extremely bored, they’ll come, and eighth graders who plan on swimming in high school may make an appearance as well. Other than that, the pool deck is empty. We as swimmers don’t get enough credit, but we’re going to start standing up for ourselves. We’re going to be so great that people can’t help but be intrigued by us. After all our lifestyle is much harder than a football player’s. We don’t get time-outs, or substitutions in the middle of a race. We have to dig deep down and find the energy to keep moving, which is more work than a football player will ever have to do. Swimming is the real sport here, and should be recognized. Next time you see a swim meet on your high school’s sport calendar, I suggest you attend it. Who knows what could happen? You could end up loving it, and writing about it, and going to every single event held by that team. You could even be the person to finally make swimming famous. I suggest that everyone gives this a try, because you might just end up changing the swimming world forever.

Was Brazil Really World Cup Material?

This past summer, the 2014 FIFA World Cup took place in Brazil. The World Cup is one of the largest international soccer tournaments across the world where 32 international teams fight for a chance to be named world champions. Fans travel halfway around the world to wear their team colors proudly and support their countries soccer team. This years champions was the powerhouse team, Germany. Second place went to Argentina and third was awarded to the Netherlands. The games took place in 12 different stadiums spread out across Brazil in places such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and Natal. Each country was divided into one of eight groups (A-G). Each team in the group would play the other three teams and depending on the points that were awarded, the top two teams would advance to the sweet sixteen/knockout round, where if they lost, they were done in the World Cup.

The Brazil team was clearly the favorite going into the tournament. The stadiums were packed with fans wearing yellow and green and player’s jerseys. They won two games and tied one with Mexico in their group division and advanced into the knockout round. The first game was against Chile that turned into a penalty kick thriller where Brazil won 3-2. Next they faced off against Chile where they won, but lost their two best players, Neymar Jr. and Thiago Silva. Neymar was kneed in in his back by Juan Zuniga and fractured his vertebrae while Silva was suspended for the next match for receiving the maximum amount of yellow cards. The game against Germany in the semi-finals was pathetic. Brazil lost 7-1!! They couldn’t even win a game without their star players. The final match against the Netherlands to determine who would come in 3rd and 4th place, was also a let down. Brazil has Silva back, but still couldn’t pull through with a win without Neymar.

And that got me thinking, if they depended so much on Neymar to get them through to the finals, then were they really World Cup material or only playing because they were the host country? I mean, losing 7-1 in a semi-final game! You have to be able to do better than that if you expect to make it into the finals. One player should not be the foundation of the team where every single person depends on him. They should be able to step up their game and want to win it for Neymar. And don’t get me wrong, they probably did want to win it, they just didn’t try hard enough and have the competitiveness they should have in a semi-final match. Or, the other possibility is that Germany was just too good and way more skillful. Germany obviously had the drive and the determination to make it to the finals and were going to do whatever it took to get there, which turned out to be pummeling the host team. And I would have done the same exact thing that Germany did. Why feel sorry for a team that can’t play without one team member? From the beginning of the tournament, I never really liked Brazil. I thought they were overrated and playing way too easy teams. But when they were matched up against Germany, they just didn’t have the skill.

The World Cup was an amazing tournament this year and had some spectacular games. There were some devastating losses and and triumphant wins. Each moment was celebrated by fans across the world, young and old. And the World Cup is an event for boys, girls, men and women. It brings people around the world together for a competition and one word that all the fans go crazy for; soccer.
